Light of Thy Countenance
“Think not that gods find no enjoyment in apocalypse: It is our noblest sport.” Making the Graphic Novel “Light of thy Countenance”

In the end of 2006, after passing one entire year without getting any work at all in the comic industries, I was contacted by my agent Joe Prado, he phoned me with a great surprise “Felipe, I got an Alan Moore comic for you”. I found it very strange, how in earth “Alan Moore”? I would start my career with something related to the genius comic book writer of Northampton?
Exactly! It would be an adaptation to comics of a story written by the master in 1994 and published in the anthology FORBIDDEN ACTS, while we were translating the complicated (for me) script in british English, and the AVATAR PRESS was collecting some references for me, I had painted a pin-up book of Lady Death (character of Brian Pulido), to gain some time (and money).
As soon as I received the script and the numerous references for the Graphic, I stated to make the layouts for the pages. The story was fantastically strange and experimental, I throw myself into this insane universe to create this piece, I was passing through a hard moment in my life and maybe this had some reflexes in the pages…

In many aspects of the story it reminds me the style of Promethea series, the own television narrates its (maybe his, or her, or “hir”) creation and influence in the human life as it was a God, it mocks of its slaves with “Alan Mooriest” phrases, with strong and well-written speech, like we can read in the page 16:
“For I am He, the voice you turned to in your loneliness. I am the one who shrank the mountains and the jungles; shrank whole wars and brought them unto you in bottles. In your billions you adore me, faces underlit with grace. I am the length and breadth of your reality and all your dearest thoughts are but extensions of my own, my perfect dreming mercy, born in brightness. I am He for whom you put aside the ones you love, and on my altars human time is gladly sacrificed, whole lives evaporated in my pure and glimmering heat. I am the silence of the will. In me are past and present both remade, and in me is a promise of the world to come, sweet lux aeterna, radiance without end.”
Mixing tons of historical references and lysergic trips in the script, I spent months painting the pages, and also painting other covers for Avatar. The whole process last more than I expected because of this interruptions, but the results pleased me a bit, when the graphic came out in the beginning of this year (2009), I had evolve lots of in my style since I first started to paint it. And also, it was a great opportunity to have my name related with the Northampton Wizard. The website Comic Book Resources asked in the month of the comic release to the master what he thought about the adaptation, he said: “Felipe Massafera and Anthony Johnston's adaptation of Light of Thy Countenance is probably more gripping than the original story. I’m immensely pleased.”

I confess that when I read that I laughed with immense joy for weeks, thinking in all the terrible lonely nights I spent drawing wasn’t for nothing.
I left here the best wishes for some people who helped me, posing for the story, without them, this work wouldn’t never be born: To Aline Manera, who gave life to Maureen Cooper, the main character of the comic; Mateus Trentin, Rogério Magrão, my mother, Nair Massafera, my brother-in-law Fernando Scheidt, my sister Giane and my nephew Ian, and to my cat Shaky who died while this novel was been made, she, more than appearing in the story, was my only companion, because she used to stay at my studio, laying down over my comic books and even over my paintings! (laughs).
A Great Hug, for everyone of you!
Felipe Massafera
-----------------------------
"NÃO PENSE QUE DEUSES NÃO ENCONTRAM PRAZER NO APOCALIPSE, É NOSSO ESPORTE MAIS NOBRE" Fazendo a Graphic novel Light of Thy Countenance.

SOU O SILÊNCIO DO DESEJO.

Felipe Massafera at FX Con 09
-
Hello Folks, Antonio here. I'm posting an interview I made with Felipe when he returned from the Fx Con 09, in Orlando. It’s a little old but, better late than never! This is a translation i made from portuguese so forgive me if you find any mistake. Here it is:
Philosophist:It is your first trip, your first flight ever. So what were you thinking while flying to the US?
Felipe:
Man, i always was afraid of flying, but actually the flight was pretty calm. The worst part is before you get on the plane: the check-in and etc. (laughs)
Philosophist:
And what did you expect to find there? The American Conventions are pretty bigger than what we have here in Brazil. How do you describe your visit to the USA to introduce yourself as an artist and a creator?
Dude, it was very easy... i mean, of course it was very importante and huge for me. FX Com is not so big as San Diego Comic Con for example, but there’s nothing like that here in Brazil. So it was very cool. I received lots of compliments from fans. AVATAR sells more and more each year and it’s very nice to see how people love the stuff they publish.
Philosophist:
So, did u feel exhausted after giving so many autographs?
- The Dark Knight, Miller Style by PastaBeast (MassaFera translated to english lol)
- Pin Up of Anna Mercury made for Christos Gage!Yes, but it was more because besides signing my stuffl for fans, I was also making some sketches for twenty bucks each. And I made a lot of them. I also signed many Anna Mercury posters (which will be released in a special edition) and a plate that will be sent for Alan Moore to sign, for the Leather Cover edition of Light (of thy countenance).
Philosophist:
About The Light of thy Countenance. The public received it very well. It was second only to the Absolute Watchmen HC on the top selling TPM editions in march, which is not a surprise, since the Watchmen movie was about to be released in theaters. So i think we can say that “ Light” had a “first moral place”.
Felipe:
Yes, I talked to some Comic Shop owners in Orlando and they said that AVATAR comics always sell pretty well there. Their Comic Shop is close to a university and the students spend hours buying comics, and Light was very well-received. The edition is very well-made, with a special paper.
- Posters and covers of Ignition City by Massafera, art by Gianlucca Pagliarani and written by Warren Ellis.Philosophist:
Did you manage well to talk to people in English? (One thing that Massafera feared so was that his English skills were too poor and that could make conversation impossible)
Felipe:
Yes, what surprised me. The guys gave me ‘an 8’ for my English and, for me, it’s very good. I don’t practice conversation for seven years or so, and my English skills have survived by watching movies and reading comics, etc.
- Felipe relaxing at the Bunny Ranch... Nah, the girls are only posing to the artists during the Con...Philosophist:
Is there something anyone said that stayed in your head?
Felipe:
You mean, at the Con?
Philosophist:
Yep
Felipe:
Well... if there was anything like that, it was totally erased by a strong hug Cerina Vincent gave me. Man, she’s sooooooo beautiful. She’s the foreign student on that movie, “Not another Teen Movie”. I met her at a party then, the other day, she went to my booth to see my work, and she loved it!
Philosophist:
Ah, she’s the one who walks naked the whole movie...
Felipe:
Yes, it was her. Se said she would like to do something related to comics since my boss already knew her. Maybe pose as Anna Mercury for me someday (laughs).
Philosophist:
That would be very interesting. You know, I was thinking about this ‘boom’ of comics being used as basis to movie scripts… I think we’ll see, in a not so distant future, many actors linking their names to comics. Thus, being linked to a franchise and, if both are well received, we’ll have something half-way to a ready-to-produce movie...
Felipe:
Yes, and Anna Mercury is a great example of great appeal. I didn’t imagine something like that, even with something created by Ellis. People really like her! I think it is really possible, specially with not so well-known actors. It’s an opportunity for both, publishers and actors, to help each other.
Philosophist:
Milo Ventamiglia (Peter from Heroes) was working on something like that, linking himself to a comic book series and lending his features to the main character.
Felipe:Exactly. And some write scripts. Even Hugh Jackman has made something like that...
Philosophist:
Yeah, and Stan Lee was working on some stuff with Ringo Star, Pamela Anderson and even Paris Hilton (laughs).
Felipe:
I think Jackman did something for Virgin Comics...
Philosophist:
Not to mention Gene Simmons willing to create and publish his own KISS’ comics.
Felipe:
Oh yeah, i heard about it.
Philosophist:
Let’s continue. Did you meet any other comics creators? Who? And how did you like them?
Felipe:
Ben Templesmith was there in his suit. Really, having a movie made of your work with Josh Hartnett in it must be a ‘plus’ to attracting women. (laughs).
- Fell by Ben Templesmith and Warren EllisPhilosophist:
“30 Days of Nnight” isn’t it? I like his art, but i should say I prefer Fell.
Felipe:
Man, i had very short time to talk to them, but all of them were very nice and considerate. Stuart Immonen, Jim Cheung, Arthur Suydam (who said I had a Canadian accent haha), Sergio Cariello, Chuck Dixon, etc.
Stuart said he bets I will soon be working to Marvel or DC (laughs). Oh, and Joseph Michael Lisner saw my stuff on Avatar's booth. I told him I like his Conan covers. William (editor of AVATAR), told him (Lisner) that I was the Number One fan of Conan, then Michael said “Oh, smart people always are” (laughs).
- Lisner and his cats...
...and one of his covers for Conan!
Philosophist:
But... Canadian? Why? Just because you are short and have those many Wolverine style photos of yourself? (laugh)
Felipe:
He asked me if I was from Canada, and I said “man, I’m from Brazil”.He said “Oh man, your accent sounds so much like a canadian’s.” (laughs)
Philosophist:
Was Jacen Burrows there too? (Jacen is another artist of AVATAR)
- Christos Gage!
No, Jacen did not show up. I met Christos Gage, he is a very nice person. I made a sketch on his famous sketch book. Man, when I saw it…his sketch book... I could not believe it. Only the greatest names of comics industry... and he asked me for a Anna Mercury. So i drew it. He works for Marvel too.
Philosophist:
He is writing for Avengers the Initiative… Or was, I think…
Philosophist:
Describe us your participation on the AVATAR Panel.
Felipe:
Well, first William introduced everybody, i talked a little bit about myself, where I came from, how do i work, etc. Then he asked me a few questions. It was very easy. Then he talked about the present and the future of AVATAR.
Philosophist:
He said (I saw the video on youtube) that AVATAR is turning to the authorial side of comic books, something more 'global' (I guess, the audio was really bad).

Felipe:
Yeah, something like that. And more Ellis coming...
Philosophist:
More of the English Golden Eggs Chicken of comics...
Felipe:
Yeah (laugh), William himself said he'll publish anything Ellis write.
Philosophist:
And how did your first contact with William occur? He seems to enjoy very much of your work, he said anything’s coming for you?
Felipe:
Yes, he’s a very happy man, and really likes my work. He reminds me of Dennys Nedry from Jurassic Park (laughs). He said that my next job would be some covers for an adaptation of a famous vampire book in the USA, but i do not remember the name right now
- Felipe at AVATAR boothPhilosophist:
“Twilight in comics”???
Felipe:
No (laughs), another book... Mike Wolfer (another AVATAR artist), will help me with some notes and sketches to the covers.
- Crécy cover by Felipe. This cover was chosen by Wizard as the ebst cover of the month it was released.Philosophist:
This will help a lot i guess. And what did you do when you were not at the booth or drawing?
Felipe:
Nothing much, because I was always doing both. But i had sometime left I went out to buy some action figures and see the convention. Man I bought a Big Bard and a mister Miracle with Kirby design that are gorgeous. I wanted Darkseid too, but there wasn’t any left.
Philosophist:
What drew most of your attention at the Con?
Felipe:
Well, first the dimension of the place, then the Cosplay Chicks. Antonio, my friend, if i told you that I took a picture with a girl dressed as Silk Spectre… Man I would marry her, and would not think twice (Laughs).
So you went to the Con, drew a lot, ate, slept... and had no time to go to Disney World, hug Donald Duck or kick Mickey Mouse’s balls?

Felipe:
I haven’t had the time, but it was very fun anyway. I can’t complain.
Philosophist:
Well, to finish this. What did you keep in mind after all this adventure?
Felipe:
The willing to keep improving my work and stay in this market, go to another conventions (in the US or any other countries). Traveling can be exhaustive but it’s worth it, it really does!

Sobre o Blog mais projeto secreto/ About the Blog plus secret project

The Who “Boris, the Spider”. Poisé! Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly...
Tchau!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello folks, here is Massafera again and for the second time I’ll do an English post here, for you who doesn’t know nothing of Portuguese understand and follow more comfortably this blog. I know that this is a globalize world and the English is more than essential for communicate with the people from other countries (and especially in this job I absolutely love).
So, I would like to excuse myself for not updating the blog earlier, but to tell the truth these times I’ve been very busy to post here. I pay more attention to my Deviant Art profile, that is easier to post (simple is just put an image and a title), and in this blog I have to spend more time to write about everything (even more now, that I have to write in both languages), but, by the way, I’m gonna receive some help from my friend Antonio Tadeu, who’s going to write for the blog about what I’m doing and everything else. I’ll give him the info about what I want to be post, want he’ll put the news here.
Well, in this first post I’ll put some images about a secret project that I’m working with Antonio, called EffectMan. Because I’m too busy drawing covers for Avatar, some cards and with the April 22nd project (about the participation of the Brazilian air force in the WWII), and just made a few sketches ‘till now:
The first two sketches are from one of the “villains” of the story, called “Acid King”, a sort of crime genius, but with mysterious intentions, mixing Grant Morrison with Lex Luthor (with a character design I have to improve).
The last one is a character that was created with a suggestion of mine, inspired in the song of The Who “Boris, the Spider”. Oh yeah! Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly...
And... So this is, when I have more something about it or the other stuff I’m doing, I’ll put here quickly with the help of Antonio. I don’t know how it’s gonna be this, how much time I’ll make another post, but I hope that this blog became weekly or, at least, with one new post at fifteen days.
A big hug for everybody who follows me and give me strength to go on! Goodbye!

ANNA MERCURY volume one.

comentem!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
